Paradise is closer than you think.
There are plenty of ways to reach Dominical from San Jose, whether you’re flying, driving, or taking a more adventurous route… but when you stay at Lamangata, we make it effortless.
At Lamangata Luxury Surf Resort, every detail is taken care of from the moment you land. Round-trip luxury transport is included in every all-inclusive stay, so there’s no need to rent a car, navigate unfamiliar roads, or coordinate multiple transfers. All you have to do is arrive, and we’ll handle the rest.
Here’s everything you need to know about getting to Dominical and, more importantly, the best way to get to Lamangata with ease.

Private Luxury SUV Transfer (Included in Your Stay)
The easiest and most comfortable way to reach Lamangata is by taking advantage of our private, air-conditioned luxury SUV transfer, which is included in your stay.
Pick Up From San Jose International Airport (SJO)
If you’re flying into San Jose airport, our driver will be there to greet you as soon as you clear customs. Your bags will be handled, and you’ll be escorted to a spacious, comfortable vehicle for a scenic 3.5-hour drive along the Pacific Coast. If you’d like to stop for a meal or a photo break, just let us know.

Pick Up From Quepos La Managua Airport
For those who prefer to shorten the drive time, a 20-minute Sansa Airlines domestic flight from San Jose to Quepos (XQP) is a great option. Once you land, we’ll be waiting at the Quepos airport for the final 45-minute transfer to the resort. The aerial views over the coastline make this a stunning way to arrive, and it’s the fastest option.
No matter how you choose to travel, once you land, the journey is smooth, comfortable, and completely handled by our team so you can slip into the Pura Vida mindset and embrace the laid-back luxury of your stay.
Other Ways to Get to Dominical, Costa Rica

If you’re researching all possible routes, here’s an overview of the alternatives. While we always recommend taking advantage of our private transport, some guests may consider other options depending on their travel plans.
Driving to Dominical and the Best Routes to Take
Renting a car is an option for travelers who prefer to explore at their own pace. While some roads are paved, conditions can vary, particularly in more remote areas. Having a car allows flexibility for day trips, and a high-clearance vehicle is recommended for those planning to visit waterfalls or less-traveled beaches. However, for guests staying at Lamangata, luxury transport is included throughout your stay, making it easy to visit the best dining spots, hidden beaches, and scenic excursions without the hassle of driving or parking.
Driving from San José to Dominical
The most common route from San José (SJO) to Dominical is via Route 27 and Route 34 (the Costanera Sur Highway). This drive takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours and is mostly paved and well-marked. Along the way, travelers will pass through popular stops like Jaco and Manuel Antonio.
Driving from Liberia to Dominical
For those arriving at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Liberia, the drive to Dominical takes approximately 5 to 6 hours. Travelers can take the Interamerican Highway (Route 1) before connecting to the Costanera Sur (Route 34).
Is Renting a Car Worth It?

Rental cars are available at SJO Airport and in major cities, and driving offers the flexibility to explore at your own pace. However, there are some important things to consider.
Parking in Dominical is limited, especially near the beach, and once you arrive at Lamangata, a car isn’t necessary. Our resort is designed for complete relaxation, and we take care of all your transport needs. If you’d like to explore Dominical or visit a waterfall, we’ll arrange a private ride for you.
Car rentals in Costa Rica also come with additional costs. Rental insurance is required and often adds hundreds of dollars to your trip. Many scenic areas, including hidden beaches and waterfalls, require driving on unpaved roads with potholes, which can be challenging for those unfamiliar with the terrain. Night driving is also not ideal due to winding mountain roads and minimal street lighting.
Taking the Bus from San Jose to Dominical

If you’re feeling adventurous, taking the Tracopa bus from San Jose to Dominical is an option. Buses depart from the Tracopa Bus Terminal and take approximately four and a half to five hours to reach Dominical. While reliable, they do not have air conditioning, and luggage storage space is limited.
Most of our guests, however, prefer the ease and comfort of private luxury transport, where every detail is handled from the moment they land. Instead of navigating multiple connections, they enjoy a seamless, air-conditioned ride with personalized service straight to the resort.
Shuttles and Private Transfers

For travelers who don’t want to rent a car but still prefer door-to-door service, private shuttles are an excellent option. Many companies offer shared and private shuttle services from San Jose, Liberia, and other popular areas to Dominical.
Private vs. Shared Shuttles
Private shuttles offer a direct and comfortable transfer, making them ideal for families or groups. Shared shuttles are a more cost-effective option but may have multiple stops, extending the travel time. Shuttle transfers can be arranged from airports, major tourist destinations, and coastal towns.
Remember… If you’re staying at Lamangata, our private luxury transport service ensures a seamless and personalized experience, with no need to coordinate separate transfers. (This service is already included in your stay!)
Taxis and Ride-Sharing Apps
Taxis are available in Quepos, Uvita, and Dominical, but they are not metered, so fares should be negotiated in advance. Travelers relying on taxis should carry cash in colones or USD and confirm fares before starting the ride.
For those staying at Lamangata, there’s no need to worry about arranging taxis as we take care of all local transportation for you.
Effortless Travel and Seamless Luxury from the Moment You Arrive

When you stay at Lamangata, every detail is taken care of from the moment you land. Whether you’re flying into San José International Airport (SJO) or Quepos (XQP), our private luxury SUVs will be waiting to provide a smooth, comfortable transfer to the resort. No rental cars, no coordinating multiple transfers… just a seamless journey straight to paradise.
With Lamangata, the luxury and convenience extends beyond arrival. Your stay is all-inclusive, and that includes local transportation. Whether you want to explore Dominical’s vibrant dining scene, chase waterfalls in the jungle, or catch a sunset surf session, we’ll take care of everything. No need to navigate unfamiliar roads, find parking, or worry about logistics. Your time here is meant for relaxation, adventure, and carefree comfort.
Luxury should feel effortless, and at Lamangata, it is. Book your stay today, and we’ll take care of the rest.
