What does Lamangata mean?

Our boutique luxury resort is named after the Swedish word “Mångata,” which describes the roadlike reflection of the moonlight on the water at night. By combining the uniquely descriptive Swedish word “Mångata” with the Spanish word “La”, meaning “the”, this poetic word captures the ethereal and serene atmosphere we strive to provide for our guests, where nature and tranquility come together to create a sense of calm and relaxation.

Water conservation

As one of the best luxury resorts in Costa Rica, we are proud to say that we collect, filter, and clean rainwater to use as our primary water source. We have implemented the latest technologies to conserve water without sacrificing comfort for our guests.

Water recycling

Waste water treatment plant that allows us to reuse all of our waste water as irrigation and maintenance water. This is just one of the many ways we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and protecting the environment.

Debbie Toll Gruelle

Meet Debbie Toll Gruelle, the visionary entrepreneur behind Lamangata Luxury Surf Resort. With a background in custom home building and a passion for hospitality, Debbie’s journey began with a double major in environmental and Latin American studies at Oberlin College. She then gained experience at Toll Brothers, Inc. and pursued a career in custom home building and commercial real estate. Now residing in Telluride, Colorado, Debbie enjoys skiing when she’s not wakesurfing or ocean surfing. Her diverse background and expertise culminated in her creation of Lamangata, a truly exceptional destination that combines her passions and offers guests a unique and unforgettable experience. At Lamangata, Debbie shares her love for sustainability, Latin American culture, and outdoor recreation with guests from around the world.

Junior “Chagüe” Vargas Salazar

Introducing Junior “Chague” Vargas Salazar, our local surf instructor and 2024 longboard champion from the small town of Hatillo, Costa Rica. With his deep love and extensive experience surfing the beaches of the southern Pacific coast of Costa Rica, Chague is an avid surfer who is passionate about sharing his skills with people of all levels. When he’s not in the water, Chague enjoys riding his dirtbike and spending time with his beloved dog Sizzla, who is adored by the entire team at Lamangata. With Chague’s expertise, infectious enthusiasm, and love for teaching, guests are sure to have an unforgettable and rewarding surfing experience.
